To a Wonderful Brother...

Today is a sad day for us.

We woke up this morning not knowing that a brewing storm is about to come. We WERE supposed to be happy. We WERE supposed to be editing pictures for Birthday cards for our two very good friends who are celebrating their Birthday- Milo and Dr. Dino. We WERE supposed to be making huge plans for Valentine’s Day… Now, we just don’t know what to do… or what to think… or how to feel… Our feelings, everything that we ever stood for, everything is now in shambles.

My brother Y.Y. died sometime around 8 AM. He was only 5.
The worst part, he didn’t die a normal death. My brothers- 750 (Labrador-German Shepherd mix), Heinz (Schnauzer) and Ninurta (Rottweiler puppy) attacked him until he died. 750 got off from his leash and attacked him… Nobody could tell us what irked him. It was a nightmare. Who would have believed that such gentle dogs would be capable of attacking one of their own… These are dogs who NEVER once inflicted pain upon any other human… each of them had their designated areas/ enclosures. They were not abused in anyway for them to just lash out like that.

Since there are too many dogs in the house, each group created their own cliques- the indistinct breeds, the “German-origin” Dogs, the “home dwellers”. For some reason, our alpha dog- 750 had his eyes set on all the indistinct breeds, but never had he picked on Y.Y before.

Y.Y was a very good boy. He was very playful. He was lean and tall, with a built similar to that of a whippet. He would give manang soft kisses and climb at her with all gentleness…. Now he is gone… and manang will never get to see him again… Poopie will never get to see him again… I never met him yet, and yet I will never ever see him, nor meet him … nor experience his gentleness.

Frankly, I am still in shock. Too many options run in my head. Not one of them is pretty in any way. I love all my brothers and sisters but how can I fend for each one of them when I am so far away? What options are available to make sure everyone is safe and unharmed?

If I cry my heart and eyes out and say I Love You repeatedly until my voice croaks and becomes no more, would it reach him in Heaven?

Goodbye manong Y.Y....
You will always be our lovely whippet...
Please paw at us when we meet in The Rainbow Bridge.

oh dear friends, we are so very sorry to hear about this. To be taken at a young age and in this manor is just heart breaking. I can't even begin to understand that type of hurt that you are all going through.

Here is a poem that helped me when Zoe left us...

Remember Our Love

I was chosen today
I’m learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don’t you cry.

And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don’t you cry
and don’t say that I’m gone.

When you’re feeling alone
just remember our love,
I’m near the stars
looking down from above.

Remember our love
In a moment you’ll see
that I’m still here beside you
when you’re thinking of me.

We know that YY was loved dearly for his short time here. You can be comforted in that fact.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you now and in the difficult days to come. We had a feeling that something was not right, but never in a million years thought this would have happened.

Please let us know if there is anything that we can do for you.

Lots of Luv & Kisses

So sorry to hear of the death of a brother. The human must be top dog to stop any of the agressive behaviour. Even then some fights break out over silly things.

We read about YY on Addie and Lucie's blog and came to say how sorry we were. And then we read the sad, sad story of what happened. We can imagine your pain and shock. Sadly, sometimes, we can never know the "why" of something, and just have to find a way out of it regardless.

We feel your sadness and share your pain.

oh aki,

i am still in shock reading about YY's tragic death. i hope you will find answers soon what drove the other dogs to attack YY.

i watch Animal Planet a lot and one thing i've learned is that food and mating drives can cause violence within the pack notwithstanding that the pack hierarchy had already been established and reinforced by hoomans. often, its the middle dog/s attacking the lowest ranking dog, as if making sure that the lowest ranking dog would remain in its place ( aki, you think YY was the lowest ranking dog?).

the secretary has applied this theory in her 9 dog household in iloilo city. there was one incident when puppy attacked jennilyn and grabbed her in the neck ( like she was really going for the kill). it happened when both female dogs were in heat and perhaps competing for male attention. after that incident, they built a separate dog house for jennilyn. the dogs are never allowed to play together when they are in heat.

in the case of their indoor dogs, luning, cleo and deedee, food and affection has been identified as the source of aggression. the hoomans now make sure that treats and vitamins and hugs are given with all three dogs far from each other.

its more difficult in the case of dogs that must be separated for life because not one of them will budge from their alpha dog status. these dogs will usually fight to death!

My mom and I wish to tell you how very sorry we are that this tragedy happened to your family. We hope for healing and learning as to why it happened.

I am still haunted by the way he died. I wonder if he blames me for his death.

If I could understand his doggie words, he was probably screaming for my help but I was too late.

I blamed the maid but I thought if I only ran to his aid sooner, he would have lived but then again he would have only lived for a short while.

I hate it.It was senseless. He had a very small area and he was fed scraps. No female dog was in heat. He had no posse of his own. He was alone.

There really was no reason why he had to go the way he did.

Terrible and sad! I am soooo sorry for your loss! I cant even imagine.

I hope answers the peace that answers could provide come to you.

I wonder if perhaps YY was sick, and the others sensed it. Pack dogs in the wild sometimes will "dispense" of sick animals. I dont know - I am trying to make sense of it too...

Holding a light to you and your family...

What a terrible thing to happen!! YY looked like such a sweet and gentle dog. I can't imagine the grief you're going through.

I've been reading Cesar Milan's books and he talks about how the pack will attack dogs that display "weak energy". Perhaps YY was not acting like his usual self that morning, and the others felt the instinct to attack to keep the pack strong.

Anyway, I'm sure YY is in a safe gentle world with the angel dogs. He certainly looked like an angel, he will be welcomed with open arms.

Our love,
Teddy, T-man Angel, and mom

This is so sad, we are all so sorry! My mom had that happen to her so you are not alone in shock and grief over family dogs killing one of their own. It was terrible for my mom, she almost fainted and couldn't believe they would do that (she had just come home from a vacation). So she knows exactly how you all feel and sends all our hugs and love.

Aki, I just heard about this in the DWB news board. I am terrible sorry to hear about your wonderful whippet brudder to die in such a horrible death. I wonder what triggered the two dogs to become so aggressive & attack him? There must have been a reason but we all will never know. Poor YY. May he rest peacefully with no more pain...My heart goes out to all of you who loved him so dearly.

Aki, what a sad sad time...and I found out only today. Our PC is still down.

Did you know that Bogart and Popsy Sumo once fought over our MumsyPica (2004) which was the reason why Popsy Sumo has to be separated from us. We take turns being in and out of our house so avoid fights.

It was a sad time for us. Thankfully, even if the black hounds fought hard, nobody died.
We still lick and kiss each other although Keeper is afraid to take the risk of letting Popsy play with us again.

I guess part of loving anybody is making sure you know and understand when to take the pain of separating them when necessary...Keeper said Popsy Sumo is not a bully. It was just one of those times...

I pray your heart is healed now as we continue to heal ours...
